Tolerance 101

Check out this absolutely excellent article from Gregory Koukl. He hits the nail directly on the head. Those that call other intolerant are showing no tolerance themselves. He rightly defines tolerance as:

Classic tolerance requires that every person be treated courteously with the freedom to express his ideas without fear of reprisal no matter what the view, not that all views have equal worth, merit, or truth.

It is impossible to believe that every idea is equal in value, the truth is that everyone has their own circle of tolerance. Everything that is matches their beliefs (or lack or beliefs), or does not challenge their values or beliefs is usually accept, or tolerate. Anything that goes against the grain of ones values or beliefs is not tolerate and it usually those beliefs that are defined as intolerant. Check out a search of Amazon for the word Christian Right. How many of these books are tolerant of the Christian faith? How many feel that Evangelical Christianity is dangerous is American values and should be watched, regulated or worse? I certainly have not read all these books, but the titles alone indicate a great lack of today’s accepted tolerance. Now I am not criticizing their opinions, the authors are welcome to them. If any or all of them consider themselves tolerant by today’s standards, then they failed the test as proven by Gregory Koukl.

[...] Interesting article from Gregory Koukl (I am really liking his articles, for more see Stand To Reason). The basic point of this article is that the arguments over embryonic stem cell research do not follow logic. He states: If abortion itself is morally acceptable—if it’s legitimate to destroy fully-formed human children right up to the point of birth (and even during delivery, in the case of partial-birth abortion)—why would anyone flinch at the idea of carving up a week-old embryo? Why the compulsion to defend destroying a lump of cells the size of a pinhead for medical benefit when it’s completely legal and acceptable to destroy a fully-formed human fetus for any reason what so ever?
