I am trying to get my arms around what G-d wants from His creation. Let’s see, from what I can make out from common theology it goes like this:
- Garden -G-d gives a Law, not following the Law will result in death. G-d wants us to live by His Law.
- Abraham - G-d credits Abraham’s faith as righteousness, so it is faith that G-d is interested in, not observance of Laws.
- Moses to Jesus - G-d gives Laws and wants all that are His people to follow them. Not following them will result in lack of blessing and seperation from G-d and His people.
- Jesus - Jesus followed the Laws perfectly as an example to us. He showed the Pharisees to be hypocrites for using their own Laws above G-d’s Law and making others do their own Laws. He also called them out for being showy and doing the Law to get noticed and recognized in doing so by other man. Jesus seems to be concerned with man following G-d’s Law and not any other ones.
- Paul - Grace, only grace. No need for Law, it has been done away with.
So with the Garden, with Moses on to Jesus and actually through Jesus’ life, the Law was important. For Abraham until Moses and since Jesus it is about either faith or grace, both which I guess are about the same or dependent upon one another.
This does not sound like a G-d that does not change. It actually sound like a G-d who changes quit frequently. I guess that is what gives me my doubts over the common Christian theology out there.
I am thankful that G-d is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, that the promises made to Abraham, to Moses, to David, to Solomon, to the disciples and to me are consistent.
