In the course of my lunch break today I read 2 interesting blog posts that were basically about the same thing. They spoke about the thought patterns most prevalent today and the major problem associated with it, that being that taken at it’s word, that it is a contradiction to itself.
In the past I posted about an article by Greg Koukl that struck a similar theme. All 3 taken together are a strong indictment against this modern thought pattern, where every idea or thought are given totally equality.
Check out the old post and these two new posts, one by Jews for Jesus blogger, Chad Elliott and the other by John MacArthur in the online magazine, Pulpit. Both are excellent post and straight to the point.
I do however feel that there are certain things that can be at the very least be perceived differently by different people without there being one right answer or one truth. I think when Paul indicates to become like a Jew to the Jews and like a Greek (or Gentile) to the Greeks(1 Corinthians 9:19-23
), that he is indicating just this fact. I think what Paul is saying is that we all come from different background with different experiences and thus we see the one truth through a different lens. This does not make the truth different for different people, but it does make the way to understand it, and possibly the way to express it different.
I have always felt that although there is one way, one path to Heaven, that we can travel down the path in different ways, ways that match our personalities. Some might take a pogo stick, other walk, other crawl, but if we are heading down the one path, the actual mode is open. I think intolerance in different denominations comes from this, where one group states that you must do this or that, or you are not really saved, or not as good of a Christian, believer, etc. What is important is that we are traveling down the path. Judging the way others on the path are traveling does injustice to the body of Messiah and the people of G-d.
So there is truth and there is tolerance, tolerate certain preferences, tolerate one’s choice to be wrong, but toleration does not redefine truth.
