I was listening to a message from Dr. Michael Brown this morning on my commute to work. There was one part where he was speaking on when God does miraculous things in our lives, that we often explain it with the word unbelievable. He stated that it was totally believable when God does great things. He continued on with another common descriptive word, incredible, and once again Dr. Brown correctly pointed out that God doing great things in our lives was something totally credible. It got me thinking what would be a good descriptive word for when God does something in our lives, since they are something that we certainly believe in and give credibility to if we are ascribing these events to the hand of God?
Uncommon is the word that came to mind. When God does something powerful in our lives it is definitely uncommon, meaning not part of our normal existence. Now you might be saying that God does wonderful powerful things in your life all the time, that it is something very common. That may be so, but I will stick by the word uncommon. Here is why.
At the end of each week Shabbat begins. Each week 52 times a year comes Shabbat. Shabbat is called Holy in Scripture (Exodus 16:23
, Exodus 20:11
, Exodus 31:14
, Exodus 35:2
, etc.). What is the opposite of Holy? Obviously unholy, but truthfully the opposite of kadosh, holy, is chol, which literally means sand (also here), and sand is something very common in the Middle East, thus something Holy, Kadosh is something very uncommon, even if it happens often, as every week, like in the case of Shabbat.
So when God does something wonderful in your life, remember it is not unbelievable or incredible, it is uncommon, it is Holy.
