I was thinking about the events that my congregation has other than Shabbat services. There is a Tuesday night Bible Study and there is a twice a month prayer service. There is a service for praying for the children, and there are monthly men’s and womens breakfasts. There is a monthly home fellowship at different peoples homes around the area so people can meet in smaller groups and usually study the word as pray for needs, but occasionally just a time of fellowship. There is also a quarter worship and praise night. So, there is quite a great deal of things usually going on there. Some are social events, some are study, some are prayer and some are worship and praise.
Sometimes I have heard it said that event like these that a church or synagogue have are ways for the member to “plug-in” and become more a part of the group. I see that as true, but I also see much more.
As I consider the events at my congregation, I consider these things to be part of good Spiritual nutrition. In other words, it is like taking your vitamins, or eating your fruits and vegetables, things that we need to d to be healthy. I think it is important to be a part of these things, both the social events, to have a good basis of like-minded friends, but also the other events that involve prayer and Bible study and worship. Without these things, it seems at least for me, my Spiritual walk is much weaker, less healthy and less ready for when the attacks and cares of the world come in and try to choke out the things of God.
I know that I see that life in the times of the Bible were much different and some say that even Shabbat was not meant or at least used as a day of worship and coming together in Biblical times, however without this time to draw close to God, corporately I am not sure how the people were able to deal with day to day life without constant involvement and encouragement for a Spiritual family. Maybe times are different, but today it seems very difficult indeed to walk with God, without a strong commitment and involvement in a local Scriptural sound group.
I would encourage everyone to find that and get involved. It is Spiritual nutrition to yourself and you might even find yourself being a service to God and being part of someone else’s Spiritual nutrition.
